There is about 1.35 billion km³ of salt water in the oceans and seas on the earth’s surface. The amount of fresh water hardly accounts for 3% of all that water. And 60% of all fresh water consists of snow and ice (1.8% of the total amount of water). So only 40% (1.2% of the total amount) of all the fresh water is at the surface or in groundwater, available to man, animal and plant.
