Artemis System Aquapuro is based on ion exchange, a process that originated in nature. With ion exchange resin, all calcium (Ca²⁺) and magnesium (Mg²⁺) ions in the water are replaced by sodium ion.

The system uses a high-quality resin cylinder, filled with the resin. This resin cylinder is placed in a synthetic housing, which also serves as a supply container for the regeneration salt.

The filtered calcium and magnesium ions, which have been caught by the resin, will eventually saturate the resin. When that happens, a regeneration process, which prepares the resin for another use, with the help of the salt solution, is started automatically. The regeneration process can be adjusted according with your wishes. In general, the regeneration process happens at night.

The only thing you will have to attend to, is refilling the salt compartment with a bag of salt, which is used only minimally. The system also adjusts the required flow of the incoming and outgoing water, the drainage of rinsing water and the filling of the salt container with water.

Unlike many other techniques, like for example magnets, an ion exchanger is the only actually proven technique to effectively and reliably soften water. The calcium is actually filtered from the water, which secures the natural balance in the water.
